The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Samuel Kofi Opoku, says many prison facilities in Ghana were inherited from the colonial era and are struggling to accommodate the growing inmate population.
According to him, the rise in crime has placed significant pressure on existing facilities, leading to severe overcrowding in many prisons across the country. He explained that some facilities originally built to house about 300 inmates are currently accommodating as many as 500 prisoners.
Supt. Opoku disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Akosua Sika Gold of ATV Ghana, where he discussed the challenges facing the country’s correctional system.
He further lamented the overcrowded conditions in many prison facilities, stressing the need for expanded infrastructure and reforms to improve living conditions for inmates.
