The 3rd National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, has stated that the party’s loss of power and subsequent move into opposition cannot be attributed solely to internal challenges within the party.

According to him, a combination of both internal and external factors played a role in the electoral outcome that led to the party leaving government.

Speaking in an interview on the television programme Asem Yi Di Ka on ATV Ghana, Alhaji Masawudu explained that while discussions within the party often focus on internal issues, it is important to also recognise broader external conditions that influenced the outcome of the election.

He noted that political parties do not operate in isolation and that national and global circumstances can affect voter behaviour and electoral results.

The New Patriotic Party went into opposition following the 2024 general elections, which saw the opposition National Democratic Congress secure victory and return to government under its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

The outcome brought an end to the NPP’s eight-year administration under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who served two terms after winning the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

In the aftermath of the election, several leaders and members of the NPP have been assessing the party’s performance and the factors that contributed to the loss. Discussions within the party have included concerns about economic challenges, public perception of governance, and internal party dynamics.

Alhaji Masawudu emphasised that a comprehensive review is necessary for the party to fully understand the circumstances that led to the defeat and to help reposition the party for future elections.

Political parties in Ghana traditionally conduct internal assessments following major electoral outcomes in order to identify strategic lessons and strengthen their organisational structures ahead of subsequent contests.
