The Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party in the Ayawaso East Constituency, Abubakar Elhassan, has criticised the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, over remarks suggesting that the United States used Ghana as a base in an airstrike in Nigeria.
According to him, public statements on sensitive security matters should be handled with caution, particularly when they involve international military operations or intelligence-related issues.
Speaking on the morning programme Anopa Bosuo on ATV Ghana, Mr. Elhassan advised government officials to be mindful when discussing confidential or security-related information on public media platforms.
He argued that comments made by the Foreign Affairs Minister on the matter could potentially expose Ghana to security risks, especially at a time when extremist groups remain active in several parts of the West African sub-region.
Mr. Elhassan noted that Ghana has long been regarded as a relatively stable country in the region, and therefore public statements that could suggest involvement in foreign military operations should be communicated carefully.
The criticism follows recent discussions surrounding remarks attributed to Mr. Ablakwa concerning alleged cooperation between Ghana and the United States in relation to a military operation in Nigeria. The comments have sparked debate among political actors and security observers over the implications of publicly discussing such matters.
Ghana maintains diplomatic and security partnerships with several international allies, including the United States, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, military training, and regional security cooperation.
Security analysts have in recent years warned that the growing presence of extremist groups in parts of the Sahel and West Africa has heightened the need for careful handling of security information, as governments work to prevent potential threats from spreading further into coastal countries such as Ghana.
Mr. Elhassan therefore urged public officials to exercise caution when addressing issues that may have national security implications, stressing that such matters should be managed in ways that safeguard the country’s safety and diplomatic interests.
