Abena Osei-Asare Calls for Investigation into Reported GOLDBOD Loss

Former Finance Minister of State and Member of Parliament for Atewa East, Abena Osei-Asare, has called for a thorough investigation into reported financial losses incurred by the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD).

In a video shared on Facebook, the Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee said the reported US$1.7 billion loss attributed to GOLDBOD must be properly scrutinised to establish how the loss occurred and whether public funds were adequately protected.

According to her, the reported loss also represents a significant opportunity cost to the country. She noted that the GH¢6 billion cited as part of the reported loss could have been used to recruit thousands of unemployed nurses, stressing the need for greater accountability in the management of public resources.

Ms Osei-Asare also urged President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his commitment to reviewing the performance of state-owned enterprises. She said entities that consistently fail to generate sufficient returns should be considered for restructuring, merger or closure where necessary.

She further welcomed reports that the Bank of Ghana, effective July 1, 2026, had stopped funding GOLDBOD as it previously did. However, she said the development should be accompanied by further measures to establish responsibility for the reported losses and ensure that public resources are properly protected.

She called for transparency and accountability in the operations of GOLDBOD, stressing that any investigation should establish the facts surrounding the reported losses and ensure that appropriate action is taken where wrongdoing is identified. By Edinam Djaton
