Afenyo-Markin Sues Sammy Gyamfi, NDC Official, Two Media Houses Over Extortion Allegations

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sued GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, an NDC official and two media houses over allegations of extortion levelled against him.

Mr Afenyo-Markin announced the legal action in Parliament on Monday, August 24, 2026, saying he had chosen to submit himself to the processes of the law.

He said the suits were intended to allow the courts to determine the allegations and the claims made against him.

According to the Minority Leader, one of the cases, suit number GT 1029/2026, was filed at the Accra High Court, while the second, suit number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, was filed at the Achimota Circuit Court.

Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that the courts would make the appropriate determination on the matters.

He also challenged his accusers to report the allegations to the police, the Office of the Special Prosecutor or any other investigative agency.

He said if a formal complaint was made and he was invited for questioning, he would submit himself to every investigation to clear his name.

The Effutu MP said political discourse had limits and warned that certain boundaries should not be crossed.

The legal action follows a war of words between Mr Afenyo-Markin and Mr Gyamfi over concerns raised by the Minority Leader about reported losses under the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and GoldBod’s role in the transactions.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has been calling for transparency and accountability over the programme, while Mr Gyamfi has responded to his criticisms, with the Minority Leader saying an allegation describing him as an “extortionist” was defamatory.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has maintained that he has served in office with integrity and says he is prepared to allow the courts and investigative institutions to determine the truth.
