Africans urged Not to View Immigrants as Threats to National Progress
October 12, 2026

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has urged African countries to view immigrants as contributors to national development rather than threats to economic progress.
Speaking in an interview on an Accra- based TV station on Saturday, October 10, 2026, the minister addressed concerns over renewed tensions in South Africa following a court decision on the rights of asylum seekers.
Mr Ablakwa advocated regulated migration that respects free movement protocols and protects the rights of all individuals, regardless of their nationality.
He said Africa could achieve greater economic development through regional integration, expressing optimism about the vision of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, for a united Africa.
According to him, while the continent had made progress in overcoming colonialism and political subjugation, the next priority should be tackling poverty and economic underdevelopment.
He maintained that stronger African cooperation and integration would be essential to achieving economic emancipation across the continent.
