Bawumia seeks Asantehemaa’s blessing Ahead of 2028 Elections

The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on Thursday received the blessings of the Asantehemaa at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Dr Bawumia was at Manhyia to seek the Queenmother’s blessings for his vision for the presidency ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He was accompanied by several party stalwarts, including regional and national executives.

The Asantehemaa, who succeeded the late Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, who reigned for eight years before passing away in August 2025, offered prayers for the former Vice President.

The visit follows a familiar tradition of seeking the blessings of the Asante traditional leadership ahead of major political activities.

In 2020, the late Asantehemaa Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III blessed Dr Bawumia ahead of his Ashanti Region campaign tour, praying: “You will go far; you will go far; you will go far,” while also asking for God’s protection for him and his entourage.

Similarly, in June 2024, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II commended Dr Bawumia for maintaining his humility over the years.

“I know you, and you have not changed over the years. Your humility is the same. Keep your humility,” the Asantehene told him.

Dr Bawumia, who was elected NPP flagbearer for the 2028 elections after winning the party’s primaries on January 31, 2026, has made Manhyia his first point of call to formally inform Otumfuo and the Asantehemaa of his candidature.

The visit reflects a longstanding tradition among NPP leaders, who have often engaged the Asante traditional leadership, particularly given the party’s significant support base in the Ashanti Region.

The Asantehemaa’s blessings and counsel for peace come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2028 general elections.
