Black Sherif breaks silence on New Song ‘Espresso’
September 23, 2026
Ghanaian musician Black Sherif has opened up about the inspiration behind “Espresso,” the opening track on his surprise project, SUN SHERIF EP.
Contrary to what the title might suggest, Black Sherif says the song is not about coffee or romance. Instead, it explores pressure, personal sacrifice, ambition and the demands that come with achieving success.
Speaking in an interview and song breakdown shared by NotJustOk, the musician explained that “Espresso” reflects his journey from street-level struggles to financial success.
The song takes listeners through his transformation from the backstreets of Konongo to a life where he is now making significant financial gains from his music and hustle.
The hook, “You and me are special, you don’t need espresso, darling do your best,” is described as Black Sherif speaking to himself and those who have been with him throughout his journey.
Other lyrics highlight the contrast between his past struggles and present lifestyle, while also revealing the emotional pressure that comes with success.
Black Sherif described himself as both “the good and the evil,” acknowledging the different sides of his personality and the internal battles that come with his journey.
The song also touches on his self-imposed distance from Ghana, public commentary about his absence, and his reflections on becoming more like his father — quiet and withdrawn while observing life from a distance.
Fans have also drawn connections between the mood of “Espresso” and his 2025 hit “One,” in which he opened up about the devastating fire that destroyed his father’s garage in Greece and affected his family.
“Espresso” appears to build on those experiences, capturing a period of reflection after pain while embracing the decision to live fully despite life’s challenges.
With the repeated message to “do your best,” Black Sherif encourages himself and his listeners to pursue excellence without relying on external validation or stimulants.
Meanwhile, SUN SHERIF EP has generated significant attention since its release, with the project reportedly trending at number one in Ghana.
