FDA WARNS TRADERS AGAINST USE OF HARMFUL CHEMICALS FOR PLANTAIN RIPENING

August 17, 2026

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned traders and the general public against the unauthorised use of chemical substances to artificially ripen plantain, following a viral video showing the alleged practice at the Madina Market in Accra. The warning was contained in a public notice issued by the FDA on August 17, 2026, after the Authority, together with the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, launched an investigation into the allegations. Preliminary findings confirmed that some traders were using Ethemax, a plant growth regulator containing 480 g/L of Ethephon as its active ingredient. Although the product is legally classified as a plant growth regulator, it carries a “Harmful” hazard warning and must only be used under approved conditions.

The FDA says the use of agricultural chemicals at incorrect concentrations or on commodities for which they have not been approved could result in harmful chemical residues on food and pose serious food safety risks. The Authority says it has identified the trader responsible for distributing the chemical at the market and has engaged her, while legal and regulatory action is being pursued against those involved in the illicit sale, distribution and improper application of the substance. The FDA has therefore directed traders to strictly follow the instructions and approved conditions on agricultural chemical labels, warning that violators will face the full sanctions of the law. Consumers have also been advised to buy fruits and vegetables from trusted sources and thoroughly wash fresh produce with clean, potable water before consumption.

The FDA says it will intensify market surveillance and public education to curb unsafe food handling and the misuse of agricultural chemicals. Members of the public who suspect unsafe food handling or chemical misuse are encouraged to report to the FDA on 0551112224/5 or via email at fda@fda.gov.gh.
