GHANA DRUNKARDS ASSOCIATION COMMENDS MAHAMA’S 100,000-HECTARE OIL PALM INITIATIVE

August 18, 2026

The Ghana Drunkards Association has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his ambitious plan to cultivate 100,000 hectares of oil palm by 2032, describing the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening Ghana’s agricultural sector and creating economic opportunities.

Speaking on ATV, the association said the expansion of oil palm cultivation had the potential to create jobs, increase opportunities for farmers, strengthen local industries and contribute to Ghana’s economic growth. The association particularly welcomed the potential benefits for young people and rural communities, noting that a well-implemented programme could support thousands of farmers and workers across the oil palm value chain. It said opportunities could be created in areas including cultivation, processing, transportation and manufacturing, providing livelihoods for people while boosting local economic activity.

The Ghana Drunkards Association, however, urged government to ensure sustained investment and transparent implementation of the programme. It also called for stronger support for smallholder farmers and measures to protect landowners and local communities. The association further stressed the need for environmentally responsible farming practices to ensure that the expansion of oil palm production does not negatively affect communities or the environment. The group said it stood ready to support national development initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and putting more money into the pockets of ordinary Ghanaians. It therefore urged government, farmers, private-sector players and other stakeholders to work together to make President Mahama’s 100,000-hectare oil palm target by 2032 a reality.
