Ghanaians Urged To Stop Burning Waste

September 1, 2026

The Portfolio Manager for Breathe Cities Accra, Dr. Elvis Kyere-Gyeabour, has cautioned residents against the open burning of waste, warning that the practice poses serious health risks.

Speaking to ATV during an educational campaign organised by Infinite 970 in partnership with Breathe Cities, Dr. Kyere-Gyeabour said burning waste damages the lungs and pollutes the air people breathe.

He explained that smoke from burning waste contains harmful substances that can contribute to respiratory diseases, lung damage and other health problems.

According to him, the campaign is aimed at educating the public about the dangers associated with open burning and encouraging residents to adopt safer waste disposal practices.

Dr. Kyere-Gyeabour urged residents to bin their waste instead of burning it, stressing the need for proper waste management to protect public health.

He said reducing the practice of open burning would help limit exposure to harmful smoke and contribute to cleaner air within communities.

He further urged individuals to support efforts to promote proper waste disposal and make responsible choices that can help protect both human health and the environment.
