Mahama to Address 81st UN General Assembly in New York Today

September 24, 2026

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to deliver Ghana’s official statement at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today, Thursday, September 24, 2026.

His address is expected to focus on Ghana’s push for reparatory justice, Africa’s development priorities and the need for stronger international cooperation.

The President is also expected to highlight progress following the adoption of a Ghana-led UN resolution on reparatory justice and outline the next steps towards addressing the historical injustices associated with the transatlantic enslavement of Africans.

Ahead of the main General Debate, President Mahama had hosted high-level events on the Accra Reset and reparatory justice, bringing together international leaders and stakeholders to discuss Africa’s development, restitution of cultural heritage and greater control over its development priorities.

The 81st UN General Assembly is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” with world leaders expected to address major global challenges and the future of international cooperation.

President Mahama’s address will form part of Ghana’s broader diplomatic engagement at the UN, as he seeks to advance the country’s positions on reparatory justice, development and Africa’s role in global affairs.
