MINORITY BOYCOTTS VETTING OF SUPREME COURT JUSTICE NOMINEES

The Minority in Parliament, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has walked out of the Appointments Committee’s sitting during the vetting of three nominees for the Supreme Court.

The walkout followed the Minority’s objection to what it described as a rushed timetable for the exercise.

Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that the Supreme Court currently has its full complement of justices and, therefore, there is no vacancy requiring an urgent appointment.

He also said the nominees were referred to Parliament only on Monday, August 24, leaving insufficient time for proper scrutiny and public participation.

The three nominees are Justice Sophia Bernasko-Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and private legal practitioner Anthony Forson Jnr.

Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, rejected the Minority’s objection, describing it as “flimsy, hollow and baseless”, and proceeded with the vetting.

The Majority subsequently continued the exercise despite the Minority’s walkout.
