Minority condemns “unnecessary” arrests
September 23, 2026

Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged President John Dramani Mahama to call his appointees to order over what he describes as excesses in the handling of the attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
Speaking on the matter, Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Minority was not opposed to accountability or state institutions carrying out their lawful duties.
However, he argued that state institutions must operate within the law and in accordance with their mandates.
He specifically raised concerns about the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), alleging that the institution has developed a reputation for exceeding its mandate.
According to him, the situation should be addressed before it affects other individuals associated with the current administration.
Afenyo-Markin cautioned President Mahama that the actions of state institutions under his administration would ultimately form part of his record in office.
He therefore called on the President to intervene and ensure that his appointees and state institutions operate within the law.
