Muntaka Calls for Speedy Amnesty for 770 Prisoners

Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak is urging the Council of State to expedite its advice on a proposed amnesty that could pave the way for the release of about 770 prisoners.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House, Mr. Muntaka said the application is currently before the Council of State and its advice is needed before the President can take a decision.

He said the government had initially targeted July 1 to begin the amnesty process, but that deadline has passed due to the delay.

The Minister disclosed that 998 prisoners benefited from a presidential amnesty granted in August 2025. The beneficiaries were selected from 1,014 prisoners recommended for amnesty following consultations with the relevant authorities.

Mr. Muntaka said the government is seeking to extend a similar intervention to about 770 eligible prisoners this year as part of efforts to decongest the country's prisons and improve conditions for inmates.

He expressed hope that the Council of State would act promptly to allow the President to consider the application and enable eligible prisoners to regain their freedom.
