New Transport Fares start September 26

September 23, 2026

Public transport fares across Ghana will increase by 8% from Saturday, September 26, 2026, following consultations between the Ministry of Transport and commercial road transport operators.

The increase was announced by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) on behalf of commercial road transport operators.

The adjustment follows consultations held between September 8 and 22, 2026, and takes into account changes in the prices of petroleum products, spare parts, vehicle maintenance and other operational costs.

The new fares will apply to shared taxis, intra-city transport (trotro), intercity long-distance transport and haulage services.

The unions said the 8% increase will be calculated based on the approved transport fares that took effect on May 24, 2025. A detailed schedule of the revised fares has been provided as a reference for operators, commuters and the general public.

According to the unions, government’s intervention on the price of diesel helped to moderate the extent of the increase.

Commercial transport operators have been directed to comply with the approved fares and display the revised fare schedules at loading terminals and stations.

The unions also warned that charging fares above the approved rates will attract sanctions.

The revised fares are expected to take effect nationwide from Saturday, September 26, 2026.
