NPP Criticises Haruna Iddrisu Over Teacher Strike.

October 12, 2026

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Abdul Latiff, has criticised Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu over the ongoing labour unrest in the education sector, citing teacher strikes, university administrative staff strikes and concerns over unpaid salaries and allowances.

Speaking on Anopa Bosuo on ATV, Abdul Latiff argued that the Education Minister had not done enough to address challenges in the sector, including school placement difficulties and industrial action by teachers and university administrators.

He said basic school teachers had been on strike for two weeks, while lecturers and administrative staff in universities had also embarked on industrial action over their concerns.

Abdul Latiff further alleged that some teachers had gone for one to three months without receiving their salaries, questioning why teachers and nurses frequently raised salary-related concerns whenever John Dramani Mahama became president.

Comparing the current situation with the previous administration, he said the government led by former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum had increased teachers’ allowances before leaving office.

He also claimed that teachers previously received additional allowances and examination-related payments as motivation, particularly in senior high schools, where teachers were sometimes paid extra to conduct additional classes under the Free Senior High School programme.

According to him, some of these payments and conditions of service have not been maintained, contributing to the concerns being raised by teachers.

Abdul Latiff called attention to the need for the government to address the concerns of education workers and resolve the ongoing disputes affecting the sector.
