SECURITY ANALYST RAISES CONCERNS OVER ALLEGED CORRUPTION AT GHANA’S BORDERS

Security analyst Andrews Tetteh has raised concerns over alleged bribery and corruption at Ghana’s borders, warning that such practices could undermine the country’s immigration controls and pose a threat to national security.

According to him, some immigration officers are reportedly eager to secure postings to border stations because of opportunities to benefit from corrupt practices.

Speaking on ATV, Andrews Tetteh alleged that competition for postings to certain border stations has become intense, with some officers allegedly going to extreme lengths to influence their deployment.

He claimed that some officers resort to spiritual means and attempt to influence senior commanders in order to secure postings to border areas. The security analyst further alleged that corruption at the borders may be contributing to the ease with which some immigrants enter the country without undergoing the required checks.

He warned that weaknesses in border management could have serious implications for national security, particularly if individuals who pose security risks are able to enter the country undetected. Mr. Tetteh therefore called for stronger monitoring and accountability within the Ghana Immigration Service, particularly at entry and exit points across the country.

He said authorities must ensure that border officers carry out their duties professionally and that allegations of bribery and abuse of office are thoroughly investigated. He also urged the relevant security agencies to strengthen surveillance at Ghana’s borders and introduce measures that would make it difficult for officers to manipulate immigration procedures for personal gain. Mr. Tetteh stressed that Ghana’s borders remain a critical part of the country’s security architecture and must therefore be protected from practices that could compromise immigration controls.

He called for sustained efforts to improve border management, strengthen internal accountability and ensure that officers posted to border stations uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
