Sheffield United justifies Jordan’s signing

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has explained why the club opted to sign Ghana captain Jordan Ayew instead of other high-profile free agents, including England striker Ivan Toney.
Wilder revealed that the club considered several options during their search for an experienced attacker. However, Ayew emerged as a more realistic choice because of his experience, versatility and strong profile.
He explained that while many expected Sheffield United to pursue Toney, signing a player of his profile would have required significantly more effort and resources.
“I don’t know who people think I’m going to sign on the free transfer list. I don’t think they’re going to expect me to go and sign Ivan Toney or somebody like that,” Wilder said.
His comments followed Sheffield United’s 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship, with Ayew featuring in the match.
The Ghanaian forward showed his experience by contributing to Sheffield United’s attacking play, creating opportunities and also helping defensively.
Ayew will now look to secure regular playing time and maintain his form as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
