Teacher Unions Give Gov’t Deadline to Resolve Promotion, Salary Issues

The three teacher unions have given government until midday on Thursday, September 24, 2026, to address outstanding issues concerning promotion placements, salary arrears and other concerns affecting teachers.

The unions—Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-GH)—said the 2025 promotion placements and payment of related arrears had not been fully implemented.

According to the unions, the situation violates an agreement reached with government to automatically place all affected teachers by the end of September 2026.

They said the development had caused frustration among teachers and added to existing concerns, including the renewal of the Collective Agreement and payment of the Deprived Area Allowance.

In an urgent notice dated Tuesday, September 22, the unions warned that if the outstanding issues were not addressed by the stated deadline, they would no longer be able to restrain teachers from taking action.

They stressed that the notice was not a threat but a commitment to teachers to ensure that their concerns are addressed.

The unions consequently urged teachers to remain calm and follow official directives from their leadership.

They also called on teachers to participate in any actions announced by their respective union leadership.

The notice was signed by Thomas T. Musah, General Secretary of GNAT; Jacob Anaba, President of NAGRAT; and King Ali Awudu, President of the relevant teacher union.
