Transport fares to go up by 8% from September 26

September 23, 2026

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has agreed to increase transport fares by 8%, effective Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said the decision was reached after a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, September 22.

He explained that the Union initially proposed a 30% increase, citing rising operational costs and the need to support drivers and transport operators.

According to him, the Ministry also raised concerns about possible reductions in petroleum product prices, which influenced discussions on the proposed adjustment.

Samuel Amoah said although there were calls to maintain the existing fares, the Union insisted that some increase was necessary to sustain operations.

Following the discussions, both sides agreed on the 8% adjustment.

The GPRTU is currently working on the new fare structure and will circulate the details to its members ahead of the implementation date.
