Trump proposes $5,000 “Trump dividend” for every adult American

US President Donald Trump has proposed paying $5,000 to every adult American if Republicans win the November congressional elections and retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Trump made the proposal during a nearly two-hour speech at the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, where he placed himself at the centre of the party’s campaign ahead of the elections.

The President described the proposed payment as a “Trump dividend”, but details on how the money would be distributed or funded remain unclear.

With about 270 million adults in the United States, the proposal could cost more than $1 trillion and may require approval from Congress. It is also not yet clear whether the payments would be legally possible.

The convention has largely focused on Trump’s policies and attacks on Democrats over issues including border security and transgender participation in sports.

The elections come at a critical time for Republicans, with polls showing concerns over Trump’s approval ratings and voter dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living.
